Color came first
Long before London, before the studio, before any of it — there was color. Growing up in Texas, I was the kid drawn to the brightest, boldest, most joyful patterns in the room. That instinct never left. When I sat down at my first sewing machine, I wasn't thinking about trends — I was thinking about how to make something you'd want to put on because it made you feel good. Florals were always going to be at the heart of it.
A print with something to say
Here's the thing about a Mary Lo print: it's not delicate, it's not shy, and it's definitely not background noise. Our prints are meant to move — abstract, painterly, a little unexpected. I obsess over the details that make a print sing: the scale of the repeat, how the colors play off each other, the balance between a busy motif and the space around it. I want a print that feels alive, like it was caught mid-motion rather than pressed flat in a book. That's why in our latest shoot we let the prints and real florals have a conversation — sweeping, gestural, unmistakably ours.
Texas heart, London eye
The way I design prints is exactly where my two worlds meet. The joy and warmth is pure Texas — I never want a piece to feel serious for the sake of it. But the discipline — the color balance, the scale of a repeat, the restraint to let one bold print breathe against a simple silhouette — that's the textile-design rigor London taught me. Every print is designed and sampled in my own studio before it ever becomes a garment.
